Amenities...

Tarbert is the terminal for the ferry sailing from Uig, Skye to Harris and is the main village on this island, Carragreich is four miles South East of there on the Urgha - Scalpay road (C78). Tarbert has grocery stores, a butchers shop, craft shops, tourist information centre and also a sport centre with a gym, swimming pool, spa and jacuzzi.

Landscape and walks...

To the north of Harris is the Isle of Lewis and although Harris and Lewis are spoken of as separate islands they are actually joined but very different, particularly the landscape, Harris being much more rugged and mountainous and less populated than Lewis.

Harris has many suitable routes for walking over moor or machair where you can see birds, wildlife and plants and where you can come across ruins of villages no longer inhabited but you can also experience the modern communities and the people who now live here. Some of these walks are organised in groups with a guide. There are many leaflets at the cottage to help you plan your time on Harris.

The west coast of Harris is well known for it's beautiful sandy beaches but the more rugged east coast has it's own attractiveness with views over the minch to the Isle of Skye.

Island-hopping...

Should you wish to visit the islands to the South of Harris such as Berneray, North and South Uist, Eriskay and Barra you can travel directly from Leverburgh in South Harris by ferry to Berneray and then travel by car as far as Eriskay as these islands are now all linked by causeways. From Eriskay there is a ferry sailing to Barra several times a day during the summer.
